When I was young I squandered my educational opportunities –I was too young and too stupid, completely unaware of how important it was to know stuff! I was a lizard; Eat, Phuck, Sleep was my mantra, my scull was impervious to anything outside of my immediate surroundings. Come to think of it now; I was fairly normal… half the kids in the school yard were rebellious clueless arceholes and the other half were nerdy little bastards –the nerds went along with the with what the elders told them; that this education chit was important, we ‘the cool kids’ didn’t fall for that… bull!
To be fare to the cool kids (CK’s), the elders didn’t do a decent job of providing education –the formulae sucked! It had worked poorly for hundreds of years so they didn’t see the need to change it… Tradition can be and often is… detrimental!
As I wrote in an earlier post; sometime in my late teens I realized how much of an ignorant dufus I was, so I left a bastion of ignorance where I’d found comfort, and headed north (literally) a few miles north to a nicer environment and found some less CK’s to hang with. I also started to read –what a struggle that was and continues to be (to a lesser extent the more I do it/practice) (I will never be a good reader nor speller nor anything to do with inglish :-))
During my long slow arduous trek to the left, towards enlightenment, towards the west side of the continent (the left coast) I was unaware how much I’d changed… I just gradually blended in. I’d allowed my mind to open-up to whatever possibilities awaited –I had no idea I was drifting toward a more open tolerant society, it was as-if the universe was pushing me that way.
It was also as-if the universe dragged me back, 50 years later, to my roots… past my roots as far east as I could go, to a place where tradition is embraced and open minds are discouraged.
Now before you easterners form a posy and come to re-educate me, let me share an observation; I noticed that there is a saying(sorta) here used to refer to those from away, called “from away” (FA’s) and I have seen empirical(?) evidence (x2) that FA’s are not welcome –a woman had started a movement to counter this rejection and in another case, going back 20 years, a European immigrant felt out of place, in that place… unwelcome possibly?
Now if you think about it the farther east we go the farther back in time we go, the more traditional things tend to be… including hatred and suspicion of others, and secular/religious discrimination, nationalism, OLD animosity’s (we hate them because we’ve always hated them!) (and of course they have-to hate us back!) (and around we go!)
The more progressive parts of the world –pockets where some of the worse traditions are being examined seem to becoming more radical (in a positive sense) while at the same time the nasty parts are ramping up their nastiness? Murder and madness from the right is countered by tolerance from the left… and the right hates the left for there “liberal” views –I argue that a vice versa is not all that appropriate in this case.
